Clearly, one of the most successful and far-reaching of the EECC’s
initiatives is the mini-grant program established in 2000. When the
Council solicited proposals from potential grantees that year, the
EECC requested that proposals had to consist of trainings and research
projects that addressed critical environmental issues that were relevant
and significant to the border region. In general, these issues fell
into one or more of the Border XXI Working Group objectives categories:
air, contingency planning and emergency response, environmental health,
environmental information resources, hazardous and solid waste, Indian
tribes, natural resources, pollution prevention, and water.
In 2004 the second round of the mini-grants project was initiated,
and again we requested that proposals consist of trainings and research
projects, as well as the production of educational materials and
their dissemination, public awareness campaigns, and field trip-based
programs that addressed critical environmental issues that were relevant
and significant to the border region. Just as the first mini-grants
focused on the issues within Border XXI, these new mini-grants focused
on furthering the goals and objectives of Border 2012: reduce water
pollution, reduce air pollution, reduce land contamination, improve
environmental health, reduce exposure to chemicals, and improve environmental
performance. Many thanks to the US EPA for their support of this
project.
Response to both RFP’s was significant, and EECC mini-grants
have been awarded for nine projects. A brief description of these
