Environmental Education Council of the Californias

In a strategic planning meeting in 2002, the EECC came up with the idea to create a comprehensive field binder for educators of the California-Baja California Border Region. The goal was to generate an effective tool kit that would help environmental educators who wanted to teach about the border region’s unique environment through real-world, hands-on experience. On October 1st of 2005, the binders were finally presented to educators in Punta Banda, Ensenada in Baja California.

Binder Objectives:

  • To provide local youth the opportunity to directly experience and learn about the border region’s unique natural environment through guided and well organized field trips.
  • To provide educators on both sides of the border with a consolidated list of resources, contacts and information with which to facilitate these field trips, and a tool with which to encourage learning and appreciation of the wealth and beauty of the border region’s environment.

The Binder itself was developed based on the research and experience of EECC Steering Committee member Hans Bertch, who trained students at National University to teach environmental education in K-12 classrooms. It contains a bi-national, bilingual curriculum that follows an easy to use educational template, and includes designated sections for each grade between 1st and 8th. In addition to the list of sites and important contacts, the binder includes relevant information, activities, and questions with which to guide students during the field trips. If you’d like more information, or a copy of the binder to use in your classroom, please contact Kama Dean at kama@propeninsula.org.
